Welcome to Alton U3A’s new website.
What a turbulent year it’s been, with Brexit, a general election and then coronavirus, which after the new year became a most worrying time for many of us.
At the time of writing our branch had ceased activity, but the fact that we have been working on plans for the next U3A year means that something’s happened; we’re busy again! The Alton branch of U3A can now flourish and once again we aim to increase our membership.
The interest groups begun last season are well established, and while times and interests change there need be no let-up in members new and old developing ideas to keep us fully engaged in retirement. The strap-line Learn, Laugh and Live is more relevant than ever.
If you are retired, semi-retired, or not in full time employment U3A is for you. Even for the more academically inclined no qualifications are needed and none awarded. And in any case there are plenty of interest groups, as you will see, which are anything but academic. So there really is something for everyone.
It is of the essence of U3A that it is run by its members for its members, and it is entirely self financing. It is a registered charity, so seeks no profit , and the fees charged for a season reflect only the costs incurred in running our branch.
So, the worst of the bad times being hopefully behind us now, and if you are new to U3A and are tempted by any of our interest groups, give it a try. You can attend twice without becoming committed (or paying!) so there’s nothing to lose. And if you’d like to meet some of us first for a chat don’t forget the monthly coffee mornings; you will find details on this site. In addition, monthly meetings are open to all, members and non-members alike. You will be very welcome!
We are working on the new Blue Book, our annual information booklet showing all that we offer, and it will be published when things are clearer. It will also be made available on this site.
I look forward to meeting you.
Godfrey Bruce-Radcliffe, Chairman, Alton U3A
